Privacy-enhancing research earns international attention
A research team from Michigan State University has won recognition in an international competition focused on privacy-enhancing technologies (PET) that bolster democracy.
Using AI to find new uses for drugs in treating diseases
Chen is a lead principal investigator for the project. The other principal investigator is Jiayu Zhou, PhD, an associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering and an authority on machine learning, data mining, and biomedical informatics. The team also includes Richard Neubig, MD, PhD, and Edmund Ellsworth, PhD, professors of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Eighteen top faculty and staff members of the Michigan State University College of Engineering are being recognized in 2021 for excellence in service and distinguished contributions during the 31st Annual Engineering Awards. The honors, considered among the college's most prestigious distinctions, are being awarded virtually this year due to the novel coronavirus.

Several important college leadership positions were established in 2018 -Yue Qi was chosen as Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity; Theo Caldwell was named Assistant Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity; and Katy Colbry was appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Services.

Jiayu Zhou, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, will use a $551,600 NSF CAREER Award to research large-scale machine learning on big data. He is the 14th Spartan Engineer to be awarded the prestigious recognition since 2010.
